
The management of academic research involves the continuous evaluation of scientific production, without dissociating it from human resources, budget, infrastructure, and technology. This article analyzes the research component of the “School of Agricultural Sciences, Universidad de Panamá”, through an integrated study in line with profiles, competencies, and objectives achieved, to generate inputs for institutional restructuring. It was based on a descriptive study for the analysis of institutional data related to years 2007 – 2018; surveys and interviews to contextualize data were used as well. The results reveal that 80% of professors perceive a deficient organization of research at the departmental level; there is a deficient collaboration inside and between departments, which limits the adoption of the new interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity paradigms. 59.18% of full professors have not completed any research in 12 years. A 91% attribute it to the lack of budget as the main limitation to investigate, followed by the teaching and administrative workload with 70%.
