The article is a literature review of research on the social representation of women and other social actors, published by the mass media in Spanish. The objective is to know the theoretical foundations of the topic and the state of the problem, through the systematization of research published in databases accessible online, as well as to know the methodologies used in this type of studies. For this, about 50 documents linked to the Google Scholar portal were reviewed, detected through the use of keywords in the search engine. Each document that coincided with the variables of social representation and mass media was selected and reviewed according to the criteria of scope and timeliness. Notes were then taken of the general data, the relevant theoretical ideas, as well as the most important results of each study. Finally, it was confirmed that in Panama, to date, no research has been published on the social representations of women or other social actors in the mass media. However, fifteen investigations carried out by professionals in higher education institutions in Spain and other Latin American countries were identified, of which seven coincide with the main variables of the line of research that is proposed to be developed in the Faculty of Social Communication of the University of Panama.
