A descriptive cross-sectional study which allowed to determine if the required surgical procedures in the first and second levels of the Fundamentals of Nursing and Adult Health II training courses, in the Competency Achieved Follow-up sheet format, established by the Department of Adult Health, was used as a means of control.
The population consisted of 108 second-year students who had completed the subjects of medical surgery.
The study population was 70 students representing 67.0% of the total.
The data collection was carried out through the application of the follow-up sheet established by the Department of Adult Health to register the procedures each student performed. Each student kept track of his record since there was none filed. Participation was voluntary, and each participant was informed about the nature of confidentiality of the study, the objective of the research, and the handling of confidential information.
The results indicated that the procedures practiced in Fundamentals of Nursing were: intake and registration of Vital Signs in 68.5%, feeding by nasogastric or nasoenteral tube in 34.0%, gastrostomy in 24.0%, weight and height in 27% in fundamentals of Nursing. Regarding Adult Health I, only 55.7% of the students perform peripheral vein cannulation, 32.8% tracheotomy cleaning, and 17.0% colostomy; 20% sent patients to the operating room, and 24.2% admitted the patients.
In conclusion, it is necessary to digitize the information of the procedures carried out, according to the level of training, for individualized monitoring to allow control of easy consultation, obtain information quickly, and be able to make decisions.
