This study explores the contribution made by Panamanian journalists to efforts to promote environmental awareness through media campaigns aimed at conserving natural resources. This analysis adopted a mixed methodology, comprising a literature review and structured surveys. The sample consisted of 50 social communicators and students from this faculty. The findings demonstrate that uncontrolled urbanization and the exploitation of natural resources were cited as the most relevant environmental issues, according to respondents. Likewise, 76% argued that press freedom and advocacy are determining factors incentivizing environmental journalists. Furthermore, an important consideration is that journalists are aware of how digital technologies and images can mobilize the community, and that a lack of funding and pressure from political and economic authorities are impediments to fully covering these phenomena. The results of the study highlight the need to guarantee adequate working conditions, the possibility of ensuring constant professional development, and the use of new communication technologies to strengthen environmental journalism in Panama.
