Abstract

This research was aimed at finding strategies that could be developed in the homes of families in rural and urban sectors of the province of Panama Oeste, in order to establish food security and nutrition to the country's families on a permanent basis and aimed to analyze the potential of home garden entrepreneurship as a sustainable alternative to reduce the cost of the basic basket in homes in Panama Oeste.

To carry out this research, the participation of the inhabitants of the communities described in the scope of this research was required: the province of Panama Oeste, districts of Arraiján, La Chorrera, Capira and San Carlos, specifically in the communities most affected by the increase in the basic basket in the townships of Puerto Caimito.  El Coco, Amador, El Arado, Playa Leona, Santa Rita, Burunga, Veracruz and San Carlos.

The type of research design used was descriptive, since it covers the level of knowledge about the cost of the basic basket, the level of consumption of vegetables, and the willingness to implement home gardens in homes to improve the family economy, as established by Law No. 127 of 2020, which regulates family farming in Panama.

The results obtained from this research showed that home gardens represent a viable alternative to promote sustainable entrepreneurship in homes in Panama Oeste, allowing families to reduce the cost of the basic basket and improve their food security.
