Abstract

Teaching and learning a foreign language is characterized by being complex, it does not occur in a linear or cumulative way, in which the teacher has the main role, since he or she must encourage and motivate that learning based on the way each learner learns. Slang is a strategy that is generally used in English, but is not valued by linguistics. The Panamanian system has been characterized by having a low level of knowledge of English, which is why slang can be used as a strategy to improve the teaching of English at the university level, therefore, the need arises to carry out this quantitative, non-experimental study, with an exploratory and cross-sectional approach. in which information is obtained through a documentary compilation and the application of a survey, to know the use and impact that slang has on the teaching of the English language in Panama. The outstanding results indicate that teachers affirm that they use slang as a strategy in the classroom, they also consider that it has an impact on the retention of vocabulary and grammatical phrases, since they allow the development of communicative skills, improving the confidence of the learner and exposing him to an experiential learning of English, when using vocabulary and phrases of colloquial use.
